Comfort brings comfort

Comfort recently retired from the NHS after more than 40 years of service. Her final role was as a sister on the maternity triage and antenatal short stay ward, a very busy and challenging area, demanding swift assessment and action to ensure the safety of mothers. But she wasn't just known on her own unit, she was famous across the wards for her huge smile and infectious laugh and over the course of her lifetime of service often cared for several generations of the same family.

Comfort was born in Nigeria before moving to the UK where she began her service to the NHS in Birmingham before moving to work at the City of London Maternity Hospital then later joining the team at “The Whitt”.

Comfort gave exceptional clinical care to the woman and families she looked after and because of that she became highly respected by colleagues across all disciplines. One of her particular strengths was her ability to provide compassionate and skilful care to bereaved families who often talk about how “Comfort brought them comfort” at their most difficult time.

Her colleague Rose who has known her since 1989 describes her as 'Comfort by name and by nature'. She says: "Comfort dedicated her working life to her work to midwifery and was well thought of by both colleagues and women and families whom she cared for.

"She would always be considerate of how scary it could be for mothers on the ward who maybe experiencing a difficult situation and would be there to provide emotional and psychological support and well excellent midwife care."

But she didn’t just keep her skills to herself. Comfort was a great teacher who was patient and reassuring but demanding of only the highest standards. Colleagues will recount how she supported them when they were students or more junior and because of that, despite her retirement, her caring legacy lives on.

Manjit Roseghini, Head of Midwifery and Women’s Health Service said: “Comfort gave exceptionally high quality clinical care to all the woman, babies, dads and families she looked after. She has truly provided continuity of care to lots of our local families and staff as their midwife.

"She created an instant bond with people thanks to her warm smile but was also a passionate advocate for her profession and for equality. I know that the maternity unit is not the same since she retired and she is much missed by many of her colleagues.”

At her retirement send off there were many friends and colleagues who attended to pay tribute. But the fact that there were also many mothers whom she had cared for, many of whom came with their children (some of who were in there twenties!) speaks volumes about her character and her ability to connect and care for people.

Despite now being officially retired she even does the occasional midwifery shift at The Whittington when we need an extra pair of hands to maintain her midwifery skills. A further sign of her commitment and dedication to the hospital and the NHS.

I am a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist working in Sri Lanka. I was working at WHITTINGTON hopsital as an international trainee from 2013 to 2015. I still remember the days I worked with Comfort. She is one of the excellent midwives I have ever met. I have learnt many things from her. I am sure that she deserves this life time award..

I have known Comfort for many years. My mother and Comfort used to take the bus to work in the 1970's. So hence as a child I grew up with hearing the name Comfort. Comfort is her name and her nature. Over the years she has taught me as a student midwife and continues to support me. Yes, definitely gets my vote. Comfort had taught me to treat each person as an individual.

Having known Comfort throughout my midwifery career she was one of my early role models, coming to my rescue when I had my son here 28years ago and a great midwife. She is the person who always goes the extra mile regardless of the pressure she is under. We need more like her in midwifery....can she be cloned???? She gets my vote.
