Eddie K leads the way for Black History Month

Eddie has worked as a Security Officer on the Whittington Hospital site for 20 years.  But as well as keeping our staff and patients safe, Eddie has made an amazing contribution to organising celebrations at the hospital to recognise the involvement and influence of people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Every October since 2007, Eddie has put on a show  - ‘Black History Month with Eddie K’ – at the hospital for staff to celebrate Black History Month.  He first came up with the idea to celebrate the opening of the hospital’s Mary Seacole ward in 2007 and it was so successful that he has repeated it every year since.

Eddie, a local resident, sources acts from the local BME community for the show, with a big focus on finding new and exciting talents.  Acts range from song to poetry to talks about history and health and the evening culminates in a celebration of West Indian and African food.  Eddie has also showcased the talents of staff in his shows.

Eddie says that he puts this show on every year to give something back to Whittington Health.  As well as entertaining, the show aims to be informative.  Eddie creates the displays and invites local artists and business owners from BME backgrounds in to have stalls and talk to staff. He also recruits local volunteers to help decorate the hall and help on the day. He is always looking for ways to make it different from the year before and get even more staff interested and turning up.

Eddie’s commitment and contribution to the trust and his local community goes beyond his work to celebrate the contribution of people from BME backgrounds.  He also raised money for the current neonatal unit by holding a party for staff and has worked with children in a school in North London to teach them about radio.

Throughout his life, Eddie has had a huge passion for music – he volunteered on the hospital radio for nearly 10 years until it closed, hosting its first Reggae Show.  When he hosted the show on Christmas Day, he would take the time afterwards to visit the wards to see patients and staff.  He talked to patients who found themselves in hospital and away from their families, cheering them up and giving them gifts.

The Trust Chair Steve Hitchins said “Not only is Eddie a great Security Officer and an advert for the trust, he is also a very caring individual who has given so much to the organisation.  His efforts really make our celebration of Black History Month what it is every year.”

So what else is left to say about a colleague a friend an ambassador who has worked so hard reminding all of the diversity of the Trust. Eddie shows passion for all the events he organises and events involving staff who helps to keep the caribbean theme going within the Trust. Eddie is the second generation of his family that have worked hard to ensure his morals and principles remain in tact. Knowing Eddie has been a blessing in disquise for me personally as he helped my now 19 year old daughter at the time of her younger teenage years to do a project on Eddie K. Eddie has always offered me an olive branch and supported me outside of the hospital as a true friend. I wish him all the best and I know that his children will always look up to him, as their own Jewel in the Crown.
Well done Eddie.

A deserved candidate and winner for this award, due to his hard work and contributions to just causes, involving the opening of a hospital ward at the Whittington Hospital, his involvement in seasonal events throughout the year and commendable for his time and effort he has put into the Black History event every year spanning 11+ years and still going strong. The Black History event is where Eddie is notable for playing a big part in the organising of it, making it a success story. Working alongside Eddie within the hospital in the past, he demonstrated all the skills in his work where he was able to deliver and provide the best possible care to patients who were involved with the security department. A liked person throughout the hospital and a man who deserves to be recognised for his efforts.
