Marcia Brown - rising through the ranks

When interviewed for a Clinical Support Worker post, Marcia had previously worked in hotel reservations and retail and demonstrated the Trust Values in customer care and approach. Although she did not have any experience in healthcare at that time it was felt that she did have the right personality and determination to achieve, and she was passionate about helping people. Marcia had already had her children so came to us as a more mature member of staff and at that time didn’t mention wanting to progress to being a nurse, but it was obvious from the outset that she was going to be an excellent candidate.

After working as Clinical Support Worker we were very pleased when Marcia decided to go to university to train as a nurse, as by then she had proved that she had the absolute capability to make a success of this. The Trust supported her 3-year training and she also worked on the bank throughout this time.

Once qualified, Marcia she worked on Warwick Hospital’s Avon Ward for 8 years, as a staff nurse and then clinical sister before recently taking on the acting ward manager post on Castle Ward.

She has a warmth and humour which is engaging and motivating for both staff and patients. She is hardworking and dedicated and has a definite ‘can do’ attitude whenever asked to do something. She doesn’t always recognise her own abilities and strengths but she is exactly the type of person you would want to care for you or work with. She is able to encourage and persuade team members from junior staff and Consultants alike with her knowledge and approach. She has always remained grounded and one of the ‘hands-on’ leaders, working with her team as a role model and coach and is always very funny. I have yet to find anyone who does not like Marcia and she is an absolute asset to our Trust.

Marcia your story resonates with me - rising through the ranks is not always a straight trajectory and your journey just serves to illustrate that it is still completely achievable - Congratulations and best wishes!
