Meagan Fernandes - Going above and beyond, time after time – truly exceptional!

Meagan has been employed by the NHS since 2004, the last three years of which have been as Head of HR Corporate at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT).

Meagan is a truly awe-inspiring individual whose ’can-do’ attitude is both refreshing and infectious.

Meagan has been the intellectual powerhouse behind the creation and implementation of our Trust Health and Wellbeing Strategy.  She has been instrumental in ensuring inclusive employee access to a wide-range of services to support health and well-being, encourage healthy lifestyle and help reduce absence.

She has established a Health and Wellbeing Group to hold responsibility for developing and implementing the strategy.  As part of this, she has implemented a fully integrated occupational health, neuro musculoskeletal (physiotherapy) and employee psychological support and therapies service which gives staff access to innovative health and well-being solutions.

In the first year of the strategy the focus was very much on onsite promotion activity, through offering heath check data.  From January 2017 to January 2018 Meagan scheduled 67 days of onsite health promotion, across 14 of the Trust’s largest sites.  An impressive total of 617 Trust staff were engaged in these events.

The types of health promotion were tailored to the needs of the workforce and included: general health sessions, resilience and mindfulness, sleep 1-2-1’s, better back workshops, sleep workshops, heart health and weight management.

In terms of the feedback from attendees, an overwhelming 71% stated that they would be making positive changes to their lifestyle in order to promote their own health and wellbeing – a great outcome!  Additionally 88% stated that they were likely, or very likely, to recommend the event to a colleague.

Never one to rest on her laurels Meagan is now looking at providing future events aligned to what staff want, namely: stress reduction, health checks, healthy ageing, mindfulness, cancer, nutrition and keeping fit within a busy life.  These will be delivered over a wider number of sites in order to facilitate staff access and promote staff engagement.

A health check manager website and wellbeing app was also introduced during this period.  Over 679 staff are now registered users.  Again, a great reflection of the hard work that Meagan has put into promoting the service.

Finally, in terms of the confidential Employee Assistance Programme,  579 individual contacts have been made to the service which offers counselling across health, financial, relationship, lifestyle and legal issues.

Meagan’s hard work has resulted in a significant shift in our Health and Wellbeing score in the NHS Staff Survey.  In 2016 only 22% of staff felt the Trust took positive action on health and wellbeing.  By 2017 this had increased to 26%.

Meagan is working closely with our colleagues across the STP to share best practice and work collaboratively.

Acknowledgement through the Windrush awards would be a fitting celebration of the outstanding effort Meagan consistently puts into her work.
