Frieza Mahmood - An outstanding individual who inspires all those around her to strive to make BSMHFT the best Mental Health Trust to work for.

Frieza started her NHS career in 2005, as a participant on the Graduate Management Training Scheme.  She has worked at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) as Head of HR Operations & Resourcing since 2015 and has been a huge source of inspiration and innovation during her time here.

It is difficult to single out any one accomplishment for specific endorsement as all of Frieza’s work is absolutely outstanding and often ground-breaking.

However, one recent example - which has had a significant and wide-ranging positive impact in the workplace - is the revision of the Bullying and Harassment Policy. 

The Trust had historically seen a disproportionate number of BME staff affected by formal processes, thus Frieza set out to draft and embed a wider and all-encompassing Dignity at Work Policy which would promote cultural change within the organisation.

Frieza had a very clear vision that the rewrite had to be more than just an update.  She wanted to embed the values of the organisation.  She wanted to learn from the previous formal processes and overall, she was absolutely adamant that under her watch this was never going to be just a ‘tick box’ exercise.

This ambitious plan was executed with precision and finesse.  Frieza has natural warmth and the ability to get on with people.  This was used to great effect in the extensive eight-month consultation with Trade Unions and employees in writing a bespoke policy for the Trust that would take us on the journey of change we needed to embark on.

This skilful process of co-creation ensured that staff across the Trust identified with, and fully bought into, the revised policy.

The consultation process culminated in an absolute showstopper of a policy launch; the likes of which had not been seen at the Trust before.  Prior to the launch day Frieza distributed a short questionnaire to ascertain what staff knew about the policy and what they wanted more information on.  On the launch date Trust Mediators were in attendance to help launch the policy, along with Occupational Health, Trade Unions, Human Resources, Equality and Diversity Leads , to name a few.

Over and above this launch day, additional roadshows were put on to take the policy out to some of the 50 Trust sites that we provide our services from.

It doesn’t stop there… Frieza has also been instrumental in developing Dignity at Work training as part of the fundamental package we provide to all line managers across the Trust.  She has also recruited, trained and provides ongoing support to a team of Dignity at Work Advisers who work across the Trust.

It is an absolute privilege and pleasure to work alongside Frieza.  It would be fantastic if her dedication to the NHS over the past 13 years could be recognised through the Windrush awards.
